Years ago, my mother and I were watching M*A*S*H when Father Mulcahy said, “I’m often mistaken for being absent.” My mother took that sentence to heart and joked about it for decades. She was quiet and unobtrusive, first in the loud and obtrusive family who raised her, then in the loud and obtrusive family of her own. But Hawkeye described Father Mulcahy as “Someone who's too modest, too utterly simple a man to know how much strength he gives us just by the decency of his life among us.” That is the quote that really exemplifies you, Mom. Not the one we laughed about all those years. Because now that you are really truly absent, I could never mistake your quiet and unobtrusive presence for this awful gaping hole in life.

Aunt Betty...What I remember most is her kindness. As a child visiting her home I remember the warm and welcoming feeling. She had a sweet heart.

Although I never recall meeting her, my Grandma Kitty always shared with me how her sister and her family were doing, where they were living, and events that they were involved with. Although I never recall meeting her, she faithfully kept up sending me birthday cards and Christmas cards. It's hard to count how many times I've moved, but I never missed one single card. What an amazing person she was to make me feel so special and so important to her. What an example to set for how a person should live and how a family should be.

My deepest condolences to Ralph, her loving husband of over 50 years, and her daughters, Judy and Joanne, my cousins. Aunt Betty's home was always an inviting place and provided many fond childhood memories for me. There was an above-ground swimming pool and all the cousins would swim and frolic together. The was a large bowling machine downstairs in the basement, which, in the summer, was the coolest place to be. Betty always served refreshments to all the kids. In the late seventies, after Betty and Ralph had moved to Arizona, I visited them in the summer. Again, we were swimming in the pool and having fun, just as we had 10-15 years earlier. Betty sent birthday and Christmas cards every year without fail. That was a kindness that she always showed. She always put in an effort to make others happy and to remember those closest to her.

To the family of Betty Morgan Cockerill, especially her husband, Ralph, and daughters, Judy and Joanne. Betty was my sister and I still feel compelled to call her by that childhood name. Betty and I shared so much while we were growing up: spending most summers & one school year living with our maternal grandparents, Katherine & Stephen Pluto of Fairchance. We lived next door to a neighbor, Mr. Hamilton, who pushed his false teeth in & out of his mouth & really scared Betty. I had to pretend I wwasn't scared since I was the oldest. We lived in a house in Fairchance that had a creek behind it. We loved playing in the creek and trying so hard to catch the minnows. We visited a farm in West VA with cows, pigs, chickens, etc. Those were wonderful summers we enjoyed. We also "helped" the family make "sorghum molasses in the fall! After we both married & were living in Livonia we enjoyed spending at least one afternoon a week together. I would take Betty & her girls to the grocery store with me & my three children. We would return to Betty & Ralph's house so all 5 kids could swim in their pool. I will miss calling her almost weekly. Betty was a dear, sweet sister, just like her photo, and I love her very much. Love and blessings to her family. Kitty Morgan McConkie
