Anne Garvie Obituary

Anne Marie Garvie of Fowlerville passed away peacefully Wednesday morning, January 29, 2025 at Hospice of Lansing Stoneleigh Residence after many months of declining health. Anne, a former resident of Detroit and Indianapolis, was 93. At the time of her death she was in the company of several family members. The oldest, of three children, Anne was born in Detroit on August 12, 1931 to Mildred (LaPointe) and John J. Long. In 1950 Anne married James Barr Garvie, beginning 62 years of loving each other through joys and sorrows with a commitment to help each other into heaven. Anne poured the Love of God, appreciation of beauty, and a world of humor into everything she did. She was an avid reader and seamstress; she could sew anything from professional curtains to prom and bridesmaids dresses. At the age of 50 she returned to school to become a nurse. Wanting so badly to succeed, she found herself overwhelmed with nursing homework, only to subsequently discover that she had completed a whole week’s worth of homework in one night! She inspired us all that it is never too late to chase your dreams. Anne was a lifelong Roman Catholic and she let her Christ-light shine for family and friends. She was originally a member of Epiphany Catholic Church in Detroit but most recently attended St.Agnes Catholic Church in Fowlerville. When raising heryoung family in Detroit, she encouraged family rosary nights and on Saturday mornings would call everyone in from playing outside to wash up to go to Confession. She was preceded in death by her infant daughter Mary Beth (1953), her sister Peggy (1951), her parents, her husband Jim (2012), and brother John (2013).She is survived by her six children: Peggy (George) Barrette of Leamington, Ontario; Anne Marie (George) L’Heureux of Lititz, Pennsylvania; Mary Kay Porretta of Fowlerville; Beth Ann (Mark) James of Plymouth; Julie (Bill) Murhling of Fortville, Indiana; and James Jr. (Sue Anne) of Lansing. Anne especially loved each one of her 29 grandchildren and all 43 great-grandchildren to the moon and back! We are so very grateful for the loving care given to Anne by her daughter Mary Kay over the past many years and to Stoneleigh Hospice for their compassion and skill during her final days. A memorial Mass will be held at St. Agnes Church in Fowlerville on Friday, February 14, 2025, at 11 a.m. It will be preceded at 10 a.m. by a Visitation.
