Arthur Mohr Obituary

OBITUARY FOR ARTHUR W. MOHR

Arthur W. Mohr Sr., known as “Art”, passed away peacefully surrounded by loved ones on January 28th, 2025. Born in New Jersey to Jack (Hankins) Mohr and Elizabeth (Betty) Wood Mohr, and was raised in Upper Montclair, NJ.

From an early age, Art was inquisitive, industrious, and mechanically gifted. His strong drive and determination were evident even in his youth. During high school, Art took on odd jobs, shoveling driveways and repairing the neighbors’ vehicles out of his parents’ garage. His earnings fueled his love for mechanics, allowing him to build “hot rods” to race the back roads for titles - reportedly and frequently being the big winner. He even funded his own flying lessons, earning his pilot’s license before he was legally old enough to drive. As his brother Kent stated, “The world was too small for Art, and flying gave him wings”.

Not long after, Art joined the Civil Air Patrol (CAP), which allowed him to expand his horizons further still, while also attending Pennsylvania Military College (now Widener University), before entering the Air Force Reserves. While in the Air Force, he met the love of his life, Mildred “Sherry” Albert. They married on February 10, 1962, had their first child, and received an honorable discharge shortly thereafter.

Art began his professional career at Loomis Engineering as a Sales Manager, before being offered the role of President of Hydramet America shortly thereafter, an opportunity that would require relocating from New Jersey to Michigan. Wanting to ensure the move was right for his wife and now three children, Art flew his own exploratory flight over the state and was immediately captivated by its landscapes, the colors of the Great Lakes, and the sense of freedom it inspired. With Sherry’s unwavering support, they embraced the adventure.

In his thirties, Art would welcome a new challenge – entrepreneurship. He founded Mohr Machinery, later becoming Mohr Corp, a manufacturer and distributor of industrial equipment serving the powder metal and ceramic industries. During his more than 60 years pursuing those efforts, Art also became a respected member of the American Ceramic Society (ACS), American Powder Metallurgy Institute (APMI), the Machinery Dealers Association (MDNA) and proud developer of Mohr Tek extrusion and powder compacting presses, which are still in use worldwide today.

Yes, Art was a force. Always creative and tenacious whether directing his attention to his work, or other interests during his lifetime such as long-distance biking, swimming, collecting antique cars, “motor homing”, or driving practically every backroad he could find in the United States. But it was on September 7, 1997, that Art found his true calling through the loving guidance of Pastor Donn Engebretson, from the Evangelical Covenant Church, and the fellowship of Alcoholic Anonymous.

During his 28 years and 142 days of sobriety that followed Art remained grateful for his second chance at life and committed to “working the program” which included sharing the message of recovery to others. Our family trusts that he has now heard the words “Well done good and faithful servant,” for his impactful legacy, but also because of who Art always was – a beloved child of God.

He will be missed by his children, Art Jr. (Lori), Scott (Anne), Dawn (Frank); siblings, Kent (Susan) Mohr, Susan (Fred) Engels, Jon Mohr; grandchildren, Brittany (Cody), Corbin, Carly, Kendal (Danny), Ryan, Carter, Jillian, Lauren (Wesley), Erika; great-grandchildren, Haisley, Briggs, and Avery; and many nieces, nephews, extended relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Mildred “Sherry” Mohr; Sister-in-Law, Jeanie Mohr; brother, Robert Mohr; and parents, Jack and Elizabeth Mohr.

A time to honor Art’s life and legacy will be held on Saturday, March 15th at Oak Grove United Methodist Church, 6686 Oak Grove Rd, Howell, MI. Visitation will be held from 10:00 – 11:00 am with a memorial service immediately following.
