Barbara Joan O'Toole

Barbara (Barb) Joan O’Toole, age 86, passed away peacefully on Friday, November 21, 2025. She was born on March 16, 1939, in Ypsilanti, Michigan to George and Maxine (Shipley) McCann. Barb will be remembered as a wonderful daughter, sister, mother, aunt, grandmother, great grandmother, and good friend to many.

Barb will be dearly missed by her children, John (Terri) O’Toole, and Kim (Wolfgang) Barrett; grandchildren Thomas O’Toole, Daniel O’Toole, Kaitlyn Davis, AnnMarie Barrett, Grace Barrett and Scott Barrett; great grandchildren Olivia Davis and Samuel O’Toole and many nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her parents, the father of her children Michael O’Toole, her brother Patrick McCann, and her sister Jeannie (McCann) Brookshire.

Barb spent most of her life in Ypsilanti prior to her dementia diagnosis. She enjoyed many sports over the years including tennis, golf, bowling, and pickleball, just to name a few. She was very athletic throughout her life and won the state championship in tennis doubles in her early 70’s. She loved animals and found great joy in spending time with many pets that became her companions throughout the years. She was also part of several local community bands where she played the clarinet for the enjoyment of her children, grandchildren, and many friends.

A Memorial Mass will be held at 11:00 am on Thursday, December 11, 2025, at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, 411 Florence Street, Ypsilanti, Michigan. The family will greet visitors at the church from 10:00 am to 11:00 am prior to the memorial mass.
