His Legacy… Harold “Nubby” Lee Smith, 88, passed away May 20, 2026. He was born on October 13, 1937, in Monroe, Michigan to Emmit Smith and Cleo Massingill. Nubby married the love of his life, Annette (Lemerand) Smith, on June 20, 1959, in Monroe, Michigan, and they spent 70 loving years together.
He will be remembered as an active man, from running a sporting goods shop in his younger years, coaching his kids, working out daily, or cheering on the Wolverines, he was always active. He also loved boxing, baseball, and softball. He enjoyed many types of motorsport including; go kart racing, Nascar, and IndyCar Series.
Outside of sports, he loved being nature. He spent time on the water boating, canoeing, swimming, diving, bird watching, and teaching his kids how to fish. He was also passionate about guns - buying them, talking about them, and attending gun shows.
Nubby was notorious for his sweet tooth. You could often find him catching up with one of his friends and snacking on Jujubes, licorice, ice cream, hot buttered popcorn, or anything sweet. He was the kind of man who could strike up a conversation with anyone, anywhere, so it goes without saying that he had many friends to share his sweets (or a good burrito) with.
Most of all, Nubby will be remembered for his meticulous and organized ways, for example: his lawn-care schedules. Perhaps because of this fact, he always showed up. Nubby was always present for his wife, kids, and friends when it mattered most.
His Family… Nubby will be missed by his wife, Annette; his children, Christina (Scott) Smith, David (Colleen) Smith, Lynne Smith Stewart; five grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents, Emmit & Cleo Smith, and his son, Terry Smith.
His Farewell… Nubby’s family and friends will gather 2:00PM-4:00PM on Sunday, June 7, 2026 at Borek Jennings Funeral Homes in Howell, Michigan. His Community Farewell will begin at 4:00PM. Pastor Doug McMunn will serve as celebrant. Memorial contributions are suggested to The Wounded Warrior Project.
