Long-time Hartland resident, Henry Kumon passed away on Sunday, May 15, 2022 at the age of 83. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Rosemary (nee Kubicki), three children, Ronald (Katheryn Maguire), Karen (Daryl Sinclair), and James (Faith Cable), and six grandchildren, Ryan, Ella, Katelyn, Sean, Victor, and Jarrett.
Henry Victor Kumon was born on May 31, 1938, in Hamtramck, Michigan, the youngest of Michael and Stella Kumon. He grew up in the Detroit area, graduating from St. Florian High School in 1956. He worked for the U.S Postal Service and Federal Department Store. Even in his youth he showed an interest in technology and engineering by working with his family to train as an electrician and by participating in the St. Florian Radio Club. He went on to pursue these interests by receiving an associate’s degree from Electronics Institute of Technology in 1959. After graduation, he applied his skill at a series of engineering jobs at Dumo Electric, Link Aviation, Ling-Temco-Vought, Burroughs, Diamond Automation, and the Lafayette Clinic, where he met his wife. In 1969, they married and moved to Hartland, Michigan, where he begin his career as an electrical engineer in the Safety Research and Development Lab at the General Motors Proving Grounds (GMPG) in Milford, Michigan, and where he worked for 32 years until his retirement in 2003. Throughout his life Hank continued his active interest in amateur radio as a member of the Milford Amateur Radio Club (MARC) and Livingston Amateur Radio Klub (LARK) and applied his skills as volunteer with the American Red Cross (ARC) as Chairman of Disaster Services and later with the Livingston County Disaster Assistance Response Team (DART). His service was distinguished by being named one of the ARC Volunteers of the Year in 1999 and 2000 with Dick Reed for which a perpetual award is named. He also served as DART President and Chairman of the Board from 2012‒2019, with many additional awards given over the years from the above organizations. Hank was an active member of the Hartland Jaycees and the GMPG Travel Trailer Club, including acting as Chief for one year. He was also Committee Chairman for Eagle Scout recipients from the Boy Scouts of America and helped to mentor 15 scouts to attain their Eagle award including his two sons. As an active member of St. John Catholic Church for 53 years, Hank helped maintain audiovisual equipment and was a technical advisor during the building of the St. John Center.
If there was a disaster in Livingston County, Hank was there. He derived great satisfaction helping those in need—whether a family experiencing a house fire, a natural disaster in the community, or even just helping at fun events at annual holiday parades in Hartland and surrounding communities.
