John Flotkoetter Obituary

John Robert Flotkoetter passed away peacefully at home on Saturday, November 19, 2022, following an action-packed 72 years of life. Born to Roberta and Robert John Flotkoetter on February 17, 1950, John spent his early years growing up in Allen Park, MI, where he could often be found tinkering with small engines and mostly staying out of trouble.

Shortly after graduation from Allen Park High School John enlisted in the US Navy, where he served aboard the USS John F. Kennedy aircraft carrier. He was honorably discharged from the military in 1973, but while serving was actually discharged off the side of the ship into the ocean. The result was a chronic back injury, but set the stage for a veteran tale that will be passed down through the generations.

John met the love of his life, Joyce (Medved) in 1972 and immediately knew that he would marry her, which he did on January 25, 1974. John and Joyce were blessed to share 48 loving years of marriage, while welcoming two children and five grandchildren into the world and experiencing countless (and most often John-conceived) adventures.

John had a love for all things outdoors and a passion for anything with a motor. While his back injury limited his mobility, it did not stop him from enjoying life to the absolute fullest. From dirt bikes and motorcycles to snowmobiles, four wheelers and boats, there were never a shortage of “toys” to keep John and all those around him entertained and on the go. He was also an avid hunter, angler and golfer who enjoyed getting lost in the woods, on Lake Huron, and even occasionally on the golf course. At the end of the day, he always found his way home, where he was the best husband and father his family could ever ask for.

“Big John” will be remembered for his big heart and larger-than-life personality. He is preceded in death by his mother and father. He is survived and remembered lovingly by his wife, Joyce; daughter, Kimberly Speer; son, Robert (Ashley); siblings Judy Kolassa, Joan (Mike) Flood, Jeffrey Flotkoetter, sister & brother in-law Gail (Dave) Vierk, grandchildren Nate, Madison, Landon, Caleb, and Cole & many nieces, nephews & cousins.

A visitation will be held at Borek Jennings Funeral Home in Hamburg, MI on Monday, November 28, 2022 from 4PM-8PM (6PM scripture service), followed by a mass at Holy Spirit Catholic Church on Tuesday, November 29, 2022 at 11AM (10AM gathering). In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to Food for the Poor, or Blue Star Service Dogs.
