Joseph Nigel Hovorka

Joseph N. (Joe) Hovorka, beloved father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, friend, and "professional conversationalist" passed away peacefully on June 14, 2026, at the age of 82

Born March 18, 1944, in Detroit to Joseph E and Martha Hovorka, his mother moved them to the Upper Peninsula while his father, an artillery Captain in the US Army, fought in the Pacific and European theaters. Joe was the eldest of nine children and graduated from Cody High School, where in 1962, he met the love of his life Carol Dattilo. They were married in July of 1966 and built a beautiful life together which spanned more than six decades until Carol's passing in 2023.

Joe and Carol built their home in Pinckney, Michigan, where they raised their family and welcomed generations of loved ones. Joe proudly served in the United States Navy and when asked why he chose the Navy, he had a simple answer: they did not require neckties.

Joe was known as a true master of his craft, renowned for his skill as a cabinet maker and woodworker. For years, he poured his talent into creating beautifully detailed cases for musical instruments. Yet, his remarkable craftsmanship was matched only by the generosity of his heart. For many years, Joe volunteered alongside Bennett's Beavers, handcrafting wooden toys to bring joy to children in hospitals. He also dedicated countless hours to the Howell Gun Club, where he proudly served as a Range Safety Officer.

Joe's faith was incredibly important to him. He and Carol attended church every Sunday, and Joe would return on Mondays to prep the church by resetting the furniture, something he truly enjoyed and another way he could serve.

Early on Joe tried his hand at hunting, but his passion was found in boats and fishing. He was often heard saying "boats are cool!" and he treasured time spent fishing with his son, grandson and brother-in-law Larry.

Joe will be remembered for his craftsmanship, service, faith, generosity, humor, and the gift he had for making people feel welcome.

Joe is survived by his two children Joe Hovorka (Janell), Nicole Hovorka (Keith), three grandchildren Elijah Hovorka (Emma), Lindsay Coleman (Travis), Lilly Shehan (Zac), and three great-grandchildren (Hilton, Damian, Lincoln). Siblings Mason Hovorka (Debbie), Sharron (Larry) Babinger, Christine (Kim) Wismann, Corrine (Mark) Arenal, Fred (Lori) Hovorka, Connie Villet and numerous nephews and nieces. He is proceeded in death by wife Carol, Parents Joseph E and Martha Hovorka, brother Ryan and sister Hazel.
