Monica Hedges Obituary

Monica Darlene Hedges of Carleton died Wednesday morning, March 19, 2025, at her home following a brief illness. She was 88.

Born February 24, 1937, in Detroit she was the daughter of Edward and Helen (Nowak) Koslosky. She was baptized at Saint Stephen Church, New Boston, by Father Alphonse Nowogrodzki, and received her First Holy Communion in May 1944 at Saint Anthony Church Belleville.

Raised on Oakville Waltz Road in Carleton, she attended Airport High School (class of 1954) and was married to Gerald Hedges on February 20, 1954, at Saint Anne Church, Detroit Beach by Father Gabriel Chiodi of the Verona Fathers, Monroe.

Gerald and Monica were part of the founding families of Saint Roch Church, Flat Rock when Father Norbert Chateau was celebrating Mass at the Flat Rock Theater. They remained at Saint Roch’s until moving to Ida in 1976, where they joined Saint Joseph’s Church. Monica belonged to the Altar Society and the Father Solanus Guild at Saint Joseph’s, Ida. She volunteered at Saint Joseph’s cleaning the church, helping with the funeral luncheons, and leading the Rosary. She was strong in her Catholic faith, attending daily Mass for many years and promoting devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary in the Blue Army and the Confraternity of the Holy Rosary. This past December 28, she made her consecration to the Holy Angels in the Opus Sanctorum Angelorum.

Monica was a devoted wife, loving mother, and grandmother. When Gerald retired in 1992, they were able to travel throughout the United States, mostly on pilgrimages to Catholic shrines. In 2001 they made a pilgrimage to Lourdes and Fatima in honor of Mary. Gerald died on October 22, 2010, after 57 years of marriage. Monica spent the last 15 years enjoying her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
