Muriel McGuire Obituary

McGuire, Muriel

Spring Arbor, MI

Muriel Ruth (Read) McGuire, age 95, passed away on April 23, 2023 in Spring Arbor, MI.  She was born on August 23, 1927 in Pinckney, MI to Fred C. Read and Viola (Peters) Read. She graduated from Pinckney High School in 1945 and from Michigan State College (now called MSU) in 1949.  On Aug. 27, 1949 she married John L. McGuire at the St. Mary’s Rectory on Pearl St. in Pinckney, with a reception at her parents’ house.

Muriel was born and raised in the beautiful large house on Mill St., across from the Pinckney Town Square.  She had long ancestral roots to this area.  Her maternal great, great, great grandfather was Claudius Britton, Sr., who fought in the Revolutionary War, and once owned the land that the town of Pinckney is settled on. He’s buried in the Pinckney Cemetery. Muriel’s maternal grandfather, Frank Peters, bought and operated the Pinckney Flouring Mill in 1901.  Her parents, Fred and Viola, met in Pinckney. Muriel’s paternal grandfather, Thomas Read, founded Read’s Coal and Feed in 1885, which later became Read Lumber Company and Grain Elevator.  Thomas Read was a pillar in the Pinckney community, and Muriel’s dad, uncle, brother and nephew all worked for the business.  Muriel’s family also owned a cottage on Portage Lake and she and her sister, Rosemary, brother Bob and parents spent July of every summer enjoying lake life with many friends and relatives.  Muriel was a Phys. Ed. Major in college, played golf, loved to swim and dive, and was proud of her participation in the “Green Splash” water ballet at college.

Muriel and her husband, John, raised five daughters.  Family was important to them and they continued to spend each June and July at the cottage on Portage Lake.  Over the years, Muriel and John lived in Orchard Lake, Birmingham, Saline and Pinckney. As retirees, they also spent six months each year in Clermont, FL.  Muriel volunteered her time and drove for the blind, sang in the church choir, and loved to dance with her husband, John. She was passionate about keeping in touch with family and friends over the years, and loved having her family around.  She will be sadly missed by all.

Muriel’s husband of 74 years, John, passed away on April 16, 2023 at age 98, exactly one week before Muriel passed.  They are survived by: their five daughters Judy McGuire, Jean (Sonny) Davis, Mary (Douglas) Kivi, Colleen (Bruce) Prevost, and Cathy (Alex) Schultz; 11 grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
