Richard Hutchins Obituary

Richard G. Hutchins went to be with Jesus on Friday, May 9, 2025, at the age of 95. A man of deep faith, steady service, and boundless generosity, Richard lived a life marked by love—for his country, his family, his community, and his Savior.

Born on April 29, 1930, in Gaylord, Michigan, to Archie and Viola Hutchins, Richard’s commitment to service began early. After graduating high school, he joined the Army National Guard in Detroit and later served in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Korean War from 1950 to 1953. Following his time in the Marines, he returned to the National Guard, where he continued serving with honor until his retirement in 1989 as a Master Sergeant. He was a proud member of The Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War, honoring the legacy of those who served before him.

In the early 1980s, Richard began working at McPherson Hospital, now Trinity Health in Howell, Michigan, where he continued to serve others well into his 80s. His work ethic and kind spirit left a lasting impression on all who knew him.

Outside of his professional life, Richard was a skilled woodworker with a generous heart. Each year, he handcrafted hundreds of wooden toys, which he donated to the Family Impact Center of Fowlerville and the Salvation Army to bring joy to children in need.

In 1987, Richard met and married the love of his life, his sweetheart Mary. Together, they shared 37 joyful years filled with travel, antiquing, visiting battlefields, camping, singing, and home projects. Their shared passion for history led them to co-author six books, including four focused on Civil War veterans in Livingston County.

A devoted member of Fowlerville United Brethren Church, Richard cherished welcoming everyone at the door, teaching Sunday School, and ringing the church bell. His faith in Jesus was not just part of his life—it was the foundation of everything he did.

Richard is survived by his beloved wife Mary; his brother Charles of Monterey, California; his son Ron (Sherry) Hutchins of SaultSte. Marie; stepdaughter Sandee (Rob) Engardio of Charlotte; five grandchildren: Holly (Drew) Filkins, Mark (Alexis) Hutchins, Sarah (Lance) Haavisto, Sabree Wilson, and Natalee (Theo) Miller; and seven great-grandchildren: Jack, Ida, Eliza, Georgie, Clayton, Keeven, and Lyle.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Archie and Viola; his brother George; and his son Steve.

Visitation will be held at Herrmann Funeral Home on Thursday, May 15, from 4 PM to 7 PM. A celebration of Richard’s life will take place on Friday, May 16, at 11 AM at Fowlerville United Brethren Church.

Richard’s legacy of faith, service, and kindness will live on in the many lives he touched
