Richard Schwab Obituary

Schwab, Richard

Hartland, Michigan

His Legacy… Richard Joseph Schwab, 83, passed away peacefully on February 15, 2026. Born on September 15, 1942, in Detroit, Michigan, Richard was the beloved son of Joseph Schwab and Fern (Peterson) Schwab. He graduated from St. Francis de Sales High School in Detroit in 1960, beginning a life marked by faith, service, and devotion to family, and country.

On September 15, 1984, he married the love of his life, Irene Cogo, in Oxford, Michigan. Together they built a life centered on faith, family, and community. Richard will be remembered as a man full of joy who truly was the life of the party. A natural jokester with a warm and generous spirit, he brought laughter and light wherever he went. He was deeply devoted to his faith and proudly served his country in the United States Navy.

His commitment to his church was unwavering. For more than 20 years, he and Irene taught religious education together, sharing their faith with countless young people. He generously volunteered at church fish fries, was a dedicated member of the Knights of Columbus, served as a Stephen Minister, and gave his time as a Boy Scout chaplain.

While he loved serving others, Richard also treasured life’s quieter moments — especially time spent fishing and enjoying peaceful afternoon naps with his granddaughter, Gabby. Above all, Richard will be remembered for his deep love of family, his steadfast faith, his playful humor, and the countless lives he touched through his kindness and service.

His Family… Richard will be missed by his wife, Irene; his children, Kristen Schwab, Michelle Kelly, Matthew Schwab, Andrea (Matt) Humenay; siblings, Kathleen Thurmon, Judy Ann (Denny) Seefelt, David Schwab; grandchildren Nicholas McCafferty, Amanda McCafferty, Gabriella Humenay and Bradley Humenay; many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Fern Schwab; siblings, Rosalie Kusluski, Betty Jo Dechy, Joey Schwab, and Donnie Schwab.

His Farewell… Richard’s family and friends will gather at 4:00 pm until his Rosary Service at 7:00 pm on Wednesday, February 18, 2026, at Borek Jennings Funeral Homes, Howell. Family will continue to gather 10:00 am until the time of his Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 am on Thursday, February 19, 2026, at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Howell, Michigan.
