Robert Johnston Jr. Obituary

Johnston, Robert

Northville, Michigan

His Legacy… Robert Lawrence  Johnston Jr., 81, passed away on January 5, 2022.  He was born on February 24, 1940, in Detroit, Michigan to Robert and Augusta (Kemmerling) Johnston Sr.. Robert married Caroline Masternack on June 16, 1967 in Dearborn, Michigan. They were married for over 37 years and gave life to 3 children, Karen, Darren and Diane.  Even after separation, Robert and Carol remained good friends.  Robert served 6 years in the Air Force before beginning his 31 years career with Channel 7 WXYZ as a sound and audio technician, on site at major sporting events, the auto show or filming breaking news with famous anchor personalities such as Bill Bonds.   Robert was very hard working and mechanically inclined having finished his basement in a sports theme, rebuilt several vehicles and was an entrepreneur at heart starting several different small businesses.  He loved sports of all kinds. He was a great armchair referee as he watched and supported the Lions, Tigers and Red Wings along with his grandkids sports teams. An avid bowler, he once bowled a 299. Golfing was his passion, he also enjoyed shooting hoops with his kids, and catching walleye. When not actively playing sports, Robert enjoyed a good mystery novel, or playing cards (especially with his oldest grandson, Devyn), while snacking on jellybeans, orange slices, or donuts. For a number of  years Robert, was also a member of the Knights of Columbus. He will be remembered for his quiet reserve, his sly jokes, and his steadfast support to his family. Robert lived his life as an example to others on how to be open-minded, accepting, hardworking, dependable, and loving.

His Family… Robert will be missed by his children, Karen Johnston, Darren (Angie) Johnston, Diane (Matthew) Trujillo; siblings, Bruce, Mark, Tim, Sue; his grandchildren, Devyn, Lauren, Alex, Luke, Gavin, Christian; and his dear friend and ex-spouse, Caroline Johnston. He is preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Augusta Johnston.
