LaBallister, Victor
Hartland, MI
His Legacy… Victor Allen LaBallister, 83, passed away January 17, 2026, after a long battle with Alzheimer’s. He was born on February 12, 1942, in Howell, Michigan to Arthur LaBallister and Mildred (Pierce) LaBallister. Victor married the love of his life, Mary Garton on February 22, 1964, in Howell, Michigan. Victor was the epitome of perseverance and tenacity. In 1958 when he was still a teenager, he was a passenger in a car accident and was ejected from the vehicle. His leg nearly had to be amputated, but he was taken to St. Joe’s in Ann Arbor where an experimental bone graph was done from his hip, building him a new knee. It was revolutionary for that time. Despite his leg remaining 2 inches shorter than the other and not having full movement in it, he tapped into his natural athleticism and became a phenomenal golfer. He was unable to complete his education due to the accident and became a printer at The Brighton Argus. He moved on to the Ann Arbor News and ultimately finished his career with the Detroit Free Press after 40 years. Victor never let his physical ailments limit him, he loved fishing, boating, camping and golfing. He never complained about his limitations and always had a smile on his face and a positive attitude. Victor was a man of faith, and the love of the Lord carried him through his physical hardships. Victor was an amazing husband, father and grandfather. He was adored by his family and will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.
