Her Legacy… Virginia Ruel Espy, 102, passed away peacefully on January 18, 2024. She was born March 6, 1921 in Chicago, Illinois to James Harold Ruel and Lucy (Watson) Ruel. Virginia was a dedicated mother to three boys, Steve, Mark and Carl, who she raised entirely on her own. She was a believer whose favorite Bible passage was the 23rd Psalm. She felt God always supported her in her challenges. And so, with God, and by her fierce independence, intelligence and resourcefulness, she picked herself up by her bootstraps to push through the hard times of being both mother and father to her children. Throughout her life she worked as a school bus driver, telephone operator, and, having earned a license as an LVN, as an emergency room nurse and hospital supply manager at Santa Monica Hospital. She was a wonderful cook. Her family enjoyed her “Norman Rockwell” style Thanksgiving, Christmas and Easter dinners. Her three boys never felt deprived. They always had their stockings filled with toys on Christmas morning and she even once gave them little chicks on Easter. She loved rich hot chocolate, and Roquefort cheese with good red wine. Virginia was very artistic, sculpting in clay and painting. She was also a book lover, always reading until her eyes no longer permitted it. Virginia had a green thumb and always had plants around the house and outside. She loved dogs and any stray could find a home with her. She adored her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and enjoyed spending time with them, whenever she could. Virginia fully loved her family and was in return deeply loved by her family and friends and will be greatly missed.
Her Family… Virginia will be missed by her children, Carl (Kim) Espy, Mark (Diane) Espy, Steve (Sally) Espy; brother, James (Mary) Ruel; first cousin Chris (Nora) Ruel, grandchildren, Adam Espy, Erin Espy (Doug) Sexton, Jake (Nicole) Espy, Kristen Espy (Evan) Netzer; great -grandchildren; Doug Sexton III, Zeke Sexton, Skyler Sexton, River Sexton, Lana Netzer, Elin Netzer, Evie Espy, Scarlett Espy. She is preceded in death by her parents, James and Lucy Ruel; sister, Janet Ruel; and ex-husbands, William Dawkins Espy Jr. and Carl Enzenberg.
Her Farewell… Virginia’s family will gather together at a later date. Memorial contributions are suggested to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital or Alzheimer’s Association. Please leave a message of comfort for Virginia’s family at 1-877-231-7900, or sign her guestbook at www.borekjennings.com.
