Obituary for Melissa Dawn Loniewski

Her Legacy… Melissa McMurray, 54, passed away September 5, 2019. She was born on September 26, 1964, in Westland, Michigan, to Franklin McMurray and Janet (Quinn) McMurray. She will be remembered as a mom at heart and was dedicated to her family as well as countless other children and young adults. She took an interest in numerous children in the local competitive swimming community and was the ultimate cheerleader. She would keep times of all the children and helped organize chaotic swim meets into well run, efficient and most importantly, positive events for swimmers from all over Michigan and beyond. She would send hundreds of “care packages” and her patented “buckets of fun” to young adults all over the country as they ventured off to college or the work world. She would organize fun events to help encourage people to participate. There was never a party, gathering or social event where she did not step up and make it a memorable event for the entire family. She would organize anything from simple pizza parties to elaborate Hawaiian luau shin-digs always had some crowd participation event which gave everyone a sense of well-being and worth. Her legendary themed adult parties kept the parents up dancing and celebrating life to the wee hours. She is quoted as saying “I’m a Cheerleader for Life” and she proved it by constantly congratulating swimmers and high school athletes with big bear hugs and a real interest in their lives. She never missed a chance to support someone knowing that this would have a positive “play it forward” effect. Melissa was known to buy lunches and dinners for service men, firefighters and the elderly and loved to purchase the meal for the person standing in line behind her. She was always looking for an opportunity to help and support. Melissa Dawn was as beautiful as her name implied. Whenever she entered a room, it lit up just like the dawn. The children, teenagers and adults all wanted to share their lives with Melissa because they always felt better walking away.

Melissa attended Plymouth-Canton High School and was an outstanding multiple sport athlete excelling in swimming and volleyball. She was a college scholarship athlete in volleyball first at Schoolcraft College, finishing second in the nation and later at Wayne State University. She worked at Tri-County Orthopedics in Farmington Hills where she met her husband, Edward. They were married October 5, 1991 in Redford, Michigan and had 29 years of married life together raising four children and supporting numerous others. They first lived in Redford Township during her husband’s orthopedic residency and moved briefly to Chicago for his fellowship. After returning, they settled in Brighton, Michigan and fully supported the community through numerous charities and social events. They were members of Saint Mary Magdalene Catholic Church in Brighton, Michigan. Their daughters Tess and Carly attended Brighton High School, their sons Matthew and Bennett attended Detroit Catholic Central high school where Melissa was very active in the age group and high school swim programs.

Her Family… Melissa will be missed by her spouse, Edward; her children, Tess Marie, Carly Louise, Matthew Gerard and Bennett Martin; her mother, Janet McMurray; siblings, Frank (Deborah) McMurray, Benjamin (Noreen) McMurray, and Eric (Holly ) McMurray. She is preceded in death by her father, Franklin McMurray.
